THE MAGICAL FOREST OF OMA
This magical forest was painted in 1984 in the surroundings of Oma in the district of Kortezubi. It is the result of Agustin Obarrola´s ( an artist born in 1930 in Bilbao) passion for landscape and his search for a synthesis of the artistic expression and nature.

This small church was the only parish church in the village from the 10th. Century till 1660 when the present church was built. Inside, on the right, there is a very ancient stone sarcophagus. According to Alfonso XI ´s chronicles, this place was used as a fortress, where people hid from the invading king when he entered their territory in 1334.
You can get there by taking a path which is on the right of the new church and carry on up a steep path until you see it.
THE QUARRIES OF EREÑO
Between the districts of Ereño and Gautegiz-Arteaga there are a series of old quarries. These quarries were used to extract a type of marble (re-crystalised reef limestone). As a result of the sedimentation of the sea which covered the Earth 145 and 65 million years ago, coral and mollusc fossils have been found. Its red tone is due to the iron oxide in the sediments.
The extraction of the limestone began two thousand years ago by the Romans. The material extracted was used in the Roman settlements in Forua. Its use was extended to many other areas of the Basque Country including Areaia and the old Roman city of Veleia.
It´s main use was decorative in buildings.
